Furthermore, we now know that not only do your genes (or \u201cgenotyb\u00e9_\u201d - \nthe pattern of your various genes) have an impact on your risk of develobing heart \ndisease, but that various genes may influence how well people respond to fish oil \nand possibly other changes in the diet. One such gene is the apoE gene. This gene \ncan exist in several different forms (E2, E3 or E4), and we all have two of these in \nvarious combinations. Individuals with an E4\/E4 pattern or genotype (less than 1 \nin 100 individuals in the UK) are thought to be at above average risk of developing \n\u2018both heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. The risk of heart disease is no greater \n\" than if you were a smoker or diabetic. However these individuals are thought to \ngain the most benefit from reducing fat and cholesterol levels in their diet, from \ntreatment with cholesterol-lowering drugs or from lifestyle modifications. \nIn Glasgow we hope to fecruit approximately 90 individuals to determine the effect \nof supplementing the diet with modest intakes of fish oils on a range of risk factofs \nfor heart disease. For each person the study will last 48 weeks. Glasgow is one of \nfour centres in the UK participating in this major study; identical studies are being \nconducted at the Universities of Southampton, Newcastle and Reading giving a \ntotal number of participants of 330 \u2018 \nWhy have I been chosen? \nWe want to study adult men and women (20-70 years) who are generally fit and \nhealthy. Anyone with very high blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease and those \nwho have suffered a heart attack in the last 2 years will not be able to take part. \nIndividuals with any abnormalities in fat metabolism, or those on medication for \nthe treatment of high blood fat levels or inflammatory conditions will also be \nineligible.
