This \ninformation will also be available to your GP. The result of the genotype \nmeasurement will also be available to you at the end of the study, but will only be - \ngiven to you and\/or your GP if you give your consent. \nWhat if I am found to have an apo E4\/E4 genotype? \nThere is a 1 in 100 chance (approximately) that you will be found to have an apo \nE4\/E4 genotype. People with this genotype are at increased risk of developing \nboth coronary heart disease and Alzheimer\u2019s disease (AD). Until recently, it would \nhave been worrying to know this and nothing could have been done to reduce the \nrisk of heart disease or AD. However, recent studies have clearly shown that \ntreatment with dietary modification or, more particularly, cholesterol-lowering - \ndrugs, has a marked gff\u00e9ct in reducing the risk of developing either of these \nproblems in the long term, and it is therefore arguable that, if you are E4\/E4, it is of \nconsiderable benefit to know this in order that treatmentv can be started. \nIf you choose to ask to know your genotype at the end of the study and you are \nE4\/E4, you will be given advice and further information. In addition we will ask \nyou for further consent before we release this information to your GP. In any \nevent, many people participating in the study with other (i.e. non E4\/E4) genotypes \nwill be found to have raised cholesterol levels requiring treatment; if you are E4\/E4 \nyou will probably have a raised cholesterol level which would justify treatmeht in \nits own right. \nHow confidential are the results? \nAll data and results are kept strictly confidential and are only available to the \nparticipant, his\/her GP and the investigators involved in the study. All results will \nbe published in the form of group averages.
