I was sexually abused by an older child in the home. I never told anyone. I was ashamed — deeply, painfully ashamed — in the way that only a child who has been violated and has no framework to understand it can be. That shame became something I wore silently, alone, for years. It settled into me and became part of how I saw myself, and it has taken an enormous amount of time and effort to begin to unpick that.
In the years that followed, I went through counselling for around ten years in an attempt to begin processing what had happened to me. Even within that space, the shame never fully left me. It clung to me in a way that was very difficult to shake. Unable to cope with what I was carrying inside, I began self-medicating with drugs and alcohol — mainly cannabis — from the age of just 13 years old. I was a child, reaching for anything that might dull the pain or silence the memories, even for a short while. That is not the behaviour of someone making poor choices freely — it is the behaviour of a child who was suffering and had been given no adequate support or safety.
The impact of the abuse and everything surrounding it has shown itself in my behaviour and relationships throughout my life. I am always on guard — with everyone, in every situation. I find it very difficult to relax, to trust, to feel safe around other people. I am always waiting for something to go wrong, always braced for the next hurt. That hypervigilance is exhausting to live with, and it has affected my relationships deeply. I also struggle with anger — I find myself shouting at people, reacting in ways that I know are connected to the pain and fear I have never been able to fully release.
The staff in this home were also aggressive towards me. They would restrain me and lock me in rooms, and the effect of being treated that way — of being physically overpowered and isolated as a form of control — pushed me to a place of such despair that I began to self-harm. I was hurting myself because I had no other outlet for what I was feeling and no one around me who was responding to my pain with anything other than force and punishment.
I was then fostered by a family, and I want to be clear that this too was not the safe haven it should have been. That family abused me until I was around 8 years old. Once again, a placement that was supposed to provide me with love and stability became another source of harm. When the fostering ended, I was returned to the home.
When I went back, the home I had previously been in burnt down, and all of the children were moved to another building just down the road — a Salvation Army building on Calvindale Road. The same children were placed there together. But the change of building brought no change in what I experienced. In this home I was badly bullied, and the abuse I suffered was wide-ranging and devastating. I was physically abused, mentally abused, and sexually abused. I was belittled constantly — made to feel small, worthless, and invisible. I was ignored in a way that, in its own quiet way, was its own form of cruelty. Because sometimes being overlooked and dismissed when you are a child desperately in need of care and attention leaves a mark just as deep as the more visible forms of abuse.
Every placement, every home, every family that was supposed to represent a fresh start became another chapter in the same painful story. I was a child who needed to be protected, valued, and heard. Instead I was harmed, over and over again, in more ways than I can always find the words for. What made it worse was the humiliation—being bullied openly, with no one stepping in to help, made me feel invisible.

The emotional impact stayed with me. I questioned myself constantly. Was I really that difficult? Did I somehow deserve the way they treated me? Deep down, I knew the answer was no, but when you’re surrounded by people who treat you like you don’t matter, it becomes hard to hold onto your sense of worth.

Looking back now, I can see how wrong it all was. No child should ever be treated that way. No one should be isolated, neglected, or harmed by the very people responsible for their care. Those experiences shaped me, but they didn’t break me. Telling my story is one way I take back my voice. It’s a reminder to myself—and to anyone who listens—that what happened wasn’t my fault. I never told anyone about the sexual assault at the time because I was terrified. I didn’t feel like I had anyone I could trust, and I believed that speaking up would only make things worse. Even though I stayed quiet, I felt deeply neglected by the staff. They should have protected me, but instead they ignored the signs and allowed the abuse to continue.

The impact of what I went through at Ballikinrain has stayed with me throughout my life. I have been diagnosed with PTSD because of the events that happened there. The physical violence, the sexual assault, the bullying, and the complete lack of support from the adults who were supposed to care for me have all had a lasting effect on my mental health. From the very beginning, the environment felt less like a place of care and more like a place of confinement. Every single night, without fail, I was locked in my room from 8pm until 7am. The windows had bars on them. I want people to truly understand what that feels like — to be a young person, lying in the dark, unable to leave, unable to get help if you needed it, staring at barred windows as if you were in a prison. It was isolating, frightening, and deeply dehumanising.
The fear did not stop there. There was a member of staff who attempted to get into my room. The fact that this person was eventually dismissed does not erase the terror I felt during that time, or the fact that I was placed in a situation where I ever had to feel unsafe in what was supposed to be my home. I should never have been put in that position. No child or young person should.
Because I felt so unsafe, I would push a chair up against the door at night just to protect myself. That is not something a person does when they feel cared for — that is something a person does when they are scared and have no one to turn to.
The staff regularly used physical restraint on me, and it was not done gently or proportionately. I was left with bruises. Being restrained in that way, that forcefully, caused me real physical pain, but the emotional damage ran even deeper. It made me feel powerless, like my body was not my own and that the people responsible for my wellbeing saw me as something to be controlled rather than someone to be supported.
The way staff spoke to me was also completely unacceptable. The language used towards me was disrespectful and unkind, and over time it wore me down. When the people who are meant to care for you speak to you badly, it affects how you see yourself.
It is no wonder that I was always running away. Running away was not me being difficult — it was me trying to survive. It was the only way I knew how to cope with an environment that felt dangerous, oppressive, and completely devoid of the compassion I so desperately needed.
I am sharing this because what happened to me was wrong, and it matters.","setting_2_statement":"I was trying to hit staff a lot during my time in this home. I want to be clear about why — it was because of the way they were treating me. I was not a violent person by nature. I was a young person who was being mistreated and had no other way to express how desperate and trapped I felt. I was simply trying to stick up for myself, but instead of being understood, I was made to feel like I was the problem. I was labelled as a difficult child, and that label has stayed with me. But looking back now, I know that is not who I was. I was a child who was not being protected.
The home had a system around weekend visits — I was allowed to go home at weekends, but only if I had been considered \"good.\" If staff decided they did not want me to go, they would call the police to stop it from happening. That felt like punishment. Going home was not a treat — it was something I needed. Being denied that, and having the police used as a tool against me, made me feel completely powerless and controlled.
The restraints were a regular part of life in that home, and they were brutal. Staff would put their knee on my back to pin me to the floor, and they would force my arm behind my back. It was really sore. It was physically painful in the moment, but the humiliation of being held down like that, over and over again, caused a much deeper kind of damage. I was a child. Nobody should have been putting their knee on my back.
I believe I was also hit with objects during my time there, though I have tried to block a lot of it out. And that is the reality of what this place did to me — I have spent years trying not to remember it. I used to sniff Tipp-Ex, aerosols, and other things to block it all out. I have also drunk heavily to cope with the memories. These were not choices made out of recklessness. They were the coping mechanisms of someone who had been through something deeply traumatic and had no support to process it.
The most painful part of all of this is that, at the time, I genuinely thought it was all normal. I thought this was just how things were. I thought it was my fault. That is what happens when abuse is consistent and unchallenged — you internalise it. You stop questioning whether you deserve better, because nobody around you is telling you that you do.
I did not deserve what happened to me in that home. I stayed in multiple different places throughout the years, moving from house to house, being fostered by different families. I never felt like I truly fit in anywhere or that I was ever part of a real family. Each move felt like starting again, and I never had the stability or safety that a child should have.

I remember one house in particular when I was in Invergordon. One of the children who lived with us ended up staying there because of how badly we were all treated. The foster carers were Bobbi and Ian — I think that was her name. They used to get us up at 6am every morning to feed the animals, and if we weren’t working, they would lock us in our rooms. There was no freedom, no kindness, and no sense of being cared for. They had several foster children living there at the time, and they were abusive to all of us. I remember one of the lads being battered really badly by them. It was so serious that eventually we were taken away from their care.

There was one incident that has stayed with me. A social worker came to visit, and instead of letting me speak to them, Bobbi locked me in my bedroom and refused to let me out. After that, our social worker was changed, but nothing was ever properly addressed. It made me feel silenced and powerless, like my voice didn’t matter.

I also remember another woman from when I was younger. She used to go to church and took me with her every Sunday. On the surface she seemed caring, but she drank heavily every single night. When she was drunk, she became abusive. Eventually she made false accusations that I had hit her daughter, and because of that, I was moved again. It didn’t matter that it wasn’t true — I had no way to defend myself, and no one seemed interested in hearing my side.

Looking back, all of these experiences have had a lasting emotional impact on me. Moving constantly, being mistreated, being blamed for things I didn’t do, and never feeling safe or wanted has shaped how I see myself and how I cope with the world. I was only five years old when I went into foster care, far too young to understand why my life felt so different from other children’s. I hoped someone would see me, understand me, and treat me with kindness. But the pattern continued. I was a hyper child—full of energy, easily excited, always moving—and instead of helping me manage that energy, the adults around me punished me for it. I would get slapped for giving “cheek,” even when I was just being myself. It felt like everything I did was wrong in their eyes.
The first woman in charge there didn’t hesitate to hit me. When she was replaced, I thought maybe things would improve, but the new woman treated me just as harshly. She would strike me with a wooden spoon, and I learned quickly to brace myself whenever she was angry. After her came another woman, and she didn’t hit me the same way, but she would throw things at me instead. Each adult had their own way of showing their frustration, and I was always the target.
Living there taught me to be constantly alert. I never knew what version of an adult I would get on any given day. I learned to shrink myself, to quiet my natural energy, to avoid drawing attention. But even then, it never seemed to be enough. The message I received over and over was that my behaviour—my personality, even—was something to be punished.
Looking back now, I can see how deeply unfair it all was. I was a child who needed guidance, patience, and understanding, not violence or humiliation. The adults who were supposed to protect me instead made me feel unsafe in the very places meant to shelter me. Those experiences shaped me in ways I’m still learning to understand, but they also taught me something important: none of it was my fault. I was a child trying to survive in environments that failed me.
