They used to make me go to the toilet, and they would stand directly outside the door, watching and listening, which made me feel extremely uncomfortable. I remember feeling embarrassed and confused because I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t just give me privacy like any child should have. They wouldn’t let me leave the bathroom until I had gone for a poo, and as a young child, that pressure made me feel scared and stressed. It felt like my body wasn’t even my own, and I had no control over something as simple as going to the toilet.

They also used to make me go to sleep during the daytime, even when I wasn’t tired. I wasn’t allowed out of the room until I had taken a nap, and it didn’t matter whether I needed one or not. I had to share the room with other people too, which made it even harder to relax or feel safe. Being forced to lie down in a room with others, knowing I wasn’t allowed to leave, made me feel trapped. I remember lying there, staring at the walls, feeling confused about why I was being treated that way.

Even though I was so young, I remember feeling scared almost all the time. I didn’t understand why adults were acting like this or why I wasn’t allowed to do normal things without being watched or controlled. It made me feel like I was in prison rather than in a place that was supposed to look after me. I felt trapped, both physically and emotionally, and I didn’t have the words back then to explain how frightening it was.

Those memories have stayed with me, even if some details are blurry. What I do remember is the fear, the lack of privacy, and the constant feeling of being controlled. No child should ever feel that way. Even now, thinking back to it, I can still feel how uncomfortable and powerless I was. It had a lasting impact on me, and it shaped the way I felt about adults, safety, and trust for a long time afterwards.","setting_2_statement":"During my time at Rimbleton, it was awful. The staff used to “restrain” me, but it wasn’t restraint at all — it was their excuse to beat me up. They would choke me, punch me, and knee me in the back. I would end up black and blue from what they did to me. It was horrible and frightening, especially because I was young and didn’t understand why adults were treating me that way. Every time they said they were going to restrain me, I knew what was coming, and the fear of that stayed with me constantly.

It wasn’t just the staff who made my time there unbearable. Other girls in the home used to pick on me and bully me. What made it worse was that the staff allowed it to happen. They didn’t step in or try to protect me. If anything, it felt like they encouraged it. They would be mean to me themselves, laugh at me, and almost reward the girls who were bullying me by giving them attention or letting them get away with things. I felt completely neglected and alone. It was like no one cared how I felt or what I was going through.

On weekends, I should have been able to go to the house, but even that didn’t happen the way it should have. The lack of support, the bullying, and the violence from staff made Rimbleton feel like a place where I had no safety and no voice. I remember feeling trapped, like there was no escape from the constant fear and humiliation. Being treated that way by both the staff and the other girls made me feel worthless, and it had a huge impact on my confidence and sense of self.
During my time they they ended up putting me into foster care and i was sexually abused there.","setting_3_statement":"During my time at Monkfords, I hated it. I was there for five years, and those years were some of the hardest of my life. You were supposed to be allowed to go home, but they never let me go. Being kept there for so long, without the chance to see my family when I needed them, made me feel trapped and forgotten.

I suffered a lot of mental abuse during my time there. The way the staff treated me was horrible. They used to call me names, bully me, and make me feel small and worthless. What made it even worse was that it wasn’t the pupils doing this — it was the staff. The adults who were supposed to care for us and protect us were the ones causing the most harm. Their words and actions chipped away at my confidence and made me feel like I didn’t matter.

It got so bad at one point that I ended up running away. I felt like I had no other choice because the environment was unbearable. After that, instead of trying to understand why I ran or offering support, the staff teased me even more. They called me names and encouraged the pupils to do the same. They made everyone join in, and hearing those names shouted at me by both staff and pupils was humiliating and deeply hurtful. It made me feel completely alone.

We were supposed to be given an allowance at the weekend for our own spending, but even that was taken away from me in the worst way. They put me into weekend foster care with an older man, and he sexually assaulted me. I did report it to the foster carer at the time, but nothing changed. I was a child, scared and vulnerable, and instead of being protected, I was placed in a situation that caused even more harm.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null,"setting_2_persons_involved":null,"setting_3_persons_involved":null}

I was scared and emotional, and instead of being supported, I was flung straight into the deep end. From the very beginning, the staff caused me stress. On my first day, they screamed at me, pushed me around, and beat me. I had no time to adjust or understand what was happening—I was simply thrown into a terrifying situation without any care or protection.

On arrival, I was put into a cell with an older inmate. From that moment on, I was subjected to daily physical abuse. He beat me black and blue every single day. I was used as a punch bag, constantly bullied and targeted. I was just a young boy with no one to help me or stand up for me. I was already struggling with my mental and physical health, and the pain I was experiencing only made everything worse.

The inmate would punch and kick me repeatedly, and he would encourage other inmates to join in by calling me names and bullying me. I was completely isolated and powerless. The staff allowed all of this to happen. They did nothing to protect me—in fact, they were part of the abuse themselves.

The staff would come into my cell and beat me as well, sometimes alongside the inmate. I lived in constant fear, 24 hours a day. There was never a moment where I felt safe. They would take my food, leaving me hungry and weak, and they would continue to bully and pick on me. I was beaten with cutlery and other objects. I was always starving, always scared, and I became a complete nervous wreck.

The worst part of my experience was that I was specifically targeted and sexually abused on a daily basis by both the staff and the inmate. I had no way to escape this. My body was in constant pain, and I was forced to endure this ongoing abuse without any protection or support. This has had a devastating and lasting impact on me.

This experience has very badly affected my mental health. The trauma I went through during those months has stayed with me for the rest of my life. It changed me completely. Even now, I continue to suffer from severe mental health issues as a result of what I endured. My sense of safety, trust in others, and ability to live a normal life have all been deeply damaged. That period of my life has left permanent scars, and I am still living with the consequences every day.","setting_2_statement":"I was then taken and placed in Long Rig End, and the abuse continued immediately. From the moment I arrived, the staff were again horrible, very nasty, and clear bullies. I was singled out and made a target straight away. On arrival, they beat me again. I was treated like an animal, with no care, dignity, or protection.

Once again, I was doubled up with an older inmate, and he was the worst of them all. He made my life hell every single day. He would slap me, call me names, and beat me constantly. There was no escape from it. I was living in fear at all times, knowing that at any moment I could be attacked again.

They would drag me out of bed while I was sleeping and beat me. I remember being pulled from my bunk, my mattress dragged from the top bunk, and being punched and beaten while I was still half asleep and completely defenceless. Even when I tried to stay in bed to avoid attention, they would kick and punch the mattress from the bottom bunk. It felt like there was no safe place, not even when I was trying to rest. The staff would come in, laugh at what was happening, and even help him beat me. That made it even worse, knowing the people who were supposed to protect me were joining in.

Most days, my food was taken from me again. I was left hungry, weak, and in constant pain. My body was covered in bruises—I was black and blue most of the time. Over time, I began to lose all hope. I felt completely broken and started to feel suicidal because I couldn’t see any way out of what I was going through.

This was also where the sexual abuse continued and became even worse. It was happening daily, carried out by both the inmate and staff. Sometimes it happened at the same time as the physical beatings, so there were moments when the abuse felt like it would never end. I felt completely powerless and trapped in my own body, which was in constant pain. I didn’t want to keep feeling like that anymore. I felt very badly victimised and targeted, as if I had been singled out for this treatment.

I was not allowed any family visits, which made everything even harder. I had no contact with anyone on the outside, no support, and no one I could turn to. I couldn’t cry openly or ask for help. I was completely isolated and alone with what was happening to me.

They would also target me in the showers, where the sexual abuse continued. Even basic things like washing were not safe. I was constantly being picked on and humiliated. It felt like every part of my life had been taken from me, and everything I went through there has stayed with me.

This has affected me my whole life. I have struggled deeply to build relationships and to trust people. I live with anxiety, PTSD, and depression as a direct result of what I experienced. Over the last five years, this trauma has come back very strongly, and I have found it extremely difficult to cope. I try to forget what happened, but it is always there in the back of my mind. Most importantly, what I went through has had a devastating impact on my life, and I feel that it has ruined it in many ways.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null,"setting_2_persons_involved":null}

From the outset it was clear that this was not a place of care — it was a place where vulnerable children were treated badly by the very people who were supposed to be looking after them, and I was one of those children.
One of the most disturbing aspects of my time there was being inappropriately touched by a male member of staff. That violation — being touched in a way that was wrong and that I had no power to stop — is something that has never left me. It reached into a part of me that no person in a position of authority should ever have been permitted to reach, and the fact that it was carried out by someone who was trusted with my care made it all the more damaging and all the more difficult to process.
The man I remember most clearly was known as the Duke. He was one of the staff members who hit me regularly and with force — using batons to do so. He was not alone in this. There were around three members of staff who treated us badly, and the Duke was among the worst of them. Being struck with a baton is not a minor thing. It is a brutal and terrifying experience, and the fact that it was happening at the hands of people who were supposed to be caring for me made it feel all the more violating and all the more hopeless. The staff knew exactly what they were doing. This was not accidental or occasional — it was deliberate, and it was inflicted on all of us in that home. We were children, and they chose to treat us that way.
The control and punishment extended to the most basic aspects of daily life. If I did not complete my work, I would be starved. Food — something every child has a right to — was used as a weapon, withheld as a punishment to keep us compliant and fearful. I was also isolated by the staff and prevented from doing anything at all within the home. That isolation, that stripping away of any form of freedom or normality, had a deep impact on me. It made me feel less than human — confined and controlled in a way that no child should ever experience.
When the pain and the fear became too much to bear, I ran away. But there was nowhere to go. When I escaped, I found myself surrounded by nothing but open fields — no town, no people, no safety, no refuge. There was quite literally nowhere I could run to. And so inevitably the staff would find me and bring me back, returning me to the very place I had been desperate to escape from. Each time I was brought back, I was locked in a room as punishment. Running away had not been a choice made lightly — it had been a desperate attempt to find some relief from what I was enduring. And each time I was caught and returned and locked away, that desperation deepened into something darker and harder to carry.
What has always stayed with me about this home is the knowledge that the staff were fully aware of what they were doing. This was not a case of individuals losing their temper or making mistakes in isolated moments. They knew. They acted with deliberateness and with impunity, and they did so to all of us. We were children in their care, entirely dependent on them, entirely without power — and they exploited that in every way they could.
The mistreatment I suffered in this home — the touching, the beatings, the starvation, the isolation, the locking away — all of it piled on top of everything else I had already been through and deepened the damage that had already been done. I left that place carrying wounds that nobody could see, but that have shaped every part of my life since. And I believe it is important that what happened there is acknowledged, recorded, and never minimised — because it was real, it was serious, and it should never have been allowed to happen to any child.","setting_2_statement":"This one I was only in here for 3 months and the abuse in this one was the exact same as the first one.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null,"setting_2_persons_involved":null}

What should have been a safe place quickly became somewhere I feared. The people who were supposed to look after me treated me in ways no child should ever experience.

One of the things I remember most clearly was how they would put salt in my juice and force me to drink it. I didn’t understand why they did it. It made me feel sick, and I would sometimes gag trying to swallow it, but they wouldn’t let me refuse. It felt like they were doing it just to see me struggle.

Because I have ADHD, I was naturally very active and energetic. Instead of trying to understand me or help me manage it, they treated it as something to punish. I spent most of my time shut away in my bedroom, isolated from everything. It wasn’t a place of comfort—it felt more like a cell. I was constantly on edge, never knowing what I might be punished for next.

The punishments were harsh and often violent. If I did something they didn’t like, I would be hit. There was no patience, no explanation—just anger. I was covered in bruises most of the time. My body ached constantly, and I learned to stay as quiet and invisible as possible just to avoid attention.

During my time there, I suffered serious injuries. I had nine knuckles broken, along with many other injuries that were never properly treated. The pain was intense, but what hurt even more was knowing that no one seemed to care. It felt like I didn’t matter, like I was just something to control rather than a child who needed care and protection.

Things got so bad at one point that my brother ran away. That moment has stayed with me. It showed just how desperate things had become for both of us. Instead of feeling safe together, we were both trying to escape in whatever way we could.

Living there meant constantly being afraid. Afraid of doing the wrong thing, afraid of being noticed, afraid of what might happen next. I didn’t feel like I had a voice, and even if I had tried to speak up, I don’t know if anyone would have listened.

Looking back, I realise that what happened wasn’t right. Children in foster care are supposed to be protected, supported, and cared for. Instead, I experienced fear, pain, and neglect. It has stayed with me, shaping how I see the world and how I understand trust.

No child should ever have to go through what I went through.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":"Alex Higginson"}

After everything I had already been through, I wanted somewhere calm, somewhere safe, somewhere I could finally breathe. But from the moment I arrived, it became clear that Ladysbridge was nothing like that. Instead of support, I was met with hostility. Instead of care, I was met with cruelty. The staff who were supposed to look after me treated me with a level of disrespect and aggression that no young person should ever have to face.
They were rude to me from the beginning, speaking to me as if I didn’t matter, as if my feelings were irrelevant. Their tone alone made me feel small, but it didn’t stop there. The physical abuse came quickly. I was hit more times than I can count, and each time it happened, I felt a little more of my confidence slip away. What made it even harder was knowing that I was disabled and should have been receiving extra understanding and support—not violence. Instead of recognising my needs, they used them against me. They treated me like an inconvenience, something to be controlled rather than cared for.
There were moments when the staff would kick me or shove me, and I remember feeling completely powerless. It wasn’t just the physical pain—it was the humiliation, the fear, the constant sense that I wasn’t safe around the very people who were meant to protect me. Their bullying wasn’t subtle. It was deliberate, targeted, and relentless. They made me feel like I didn’t belong, like I was a problem they didn’t want to deal with.
Every day at Ladysbridge felt like walking into a storm. I never knew what mood the staff would be in or what would set them off. Even when I tried to keep to myself, it didn’t matter. They always found a reason to be harsh. The way they spoke to me chipped away at my self worth. The way they treated me physically made me feel like I had no control over my own life. I was constantly on edge, constantly bracing myself for the next incident.
Being disabled made everything even more frightening. I couldn’t always move quickly or defend myself, and they knew that. Instead of offering patience or understanding, they used my vulnerability as an excuse to be even rougher. It left me feeling trapped in a place where my needs were ignored and my voice didn’t matter.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}
