From the very first nights I arrived, I was restrained — for three consecutive nights. I had never experienced anything like it before in my life, and I was absolutely terrified. Being physically restrained, held down and overpowered, is a frightening experience for any person — but for a child encountering it for the first time, in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by strangers, it was overwhelming. I was so scared that I begged my mum to come and get me. I just wanted to go home. I wanted someone who loved me to come and take me away from that place. That desperation, that fear in those first few nights, set the tone for everything that followed.
During my time there, I tried on one occasion to help another person who was being restrained. I acted out of instinct, out of a basic human impulse to help someone who appeared to be in distress. It was not something I regret, because it came from a place of genuine care. But the environment I was in was one where even acts of compassion could lead to further pain and confusion.
There was also a young girl in the home who would touch my leg and touch me all over, and she continued to do this for the entire duration of my time there. It made me deeply uncomfortable and left me feeling confused and unsettled in a way that was very difficult to process, particularly given everything else I was already dealing with in that environment.
The staff used methods of control that were cruel and deliberately designed to remove any sense of freedom or agency I had. They took my trainers away so that I could not run away. That deliberate act — removing something as basic as my footwear to physically prevent me from leaving — made me feel completely trapped. When I did attempt to leave, they would stop me and drag me back. I was a child, and every avenue of escape had been closed off to me, both physically and emotionally.
What made the environment even more disturbing was that the staff would make me beat other people up. I want to be clear about what that means — I was not acting freely or out of my own will. I was being directed, pressured, and manipulated by adults into harming other children. The effect of being forced to hurt someone else, of being used in that way, is something that added a particular layer of shame and confusion to everything I was already carrying. It was another way in which the adults in that home stripped away my sense of self and my sense of right and wrong.
Children were locked in rooms regularly, and the fear and uncertainty that created was ever present. I remember one boy in particular who was locked in a room for four days. Four days. None of us knew what was happening to him. None of us knew whether he was alright. We did not know if he was alive. Living with that uncertainty — wondering whether the person locked behind that door was dead — is not something any child should ever have to experience. It created an atmosphere of fear that permeated everything, a constant undercurrent of dread that made every day feel deeply unsafe.
Throughout all of this, I carried a longing that I suspect never fully goes away — the longing for my mum to come and take me home, for someone who loved me to walk through that door and rescue me from what I was living through. That feeling of desperately needing someone and not being reached, of calling out and not being answered, is one of the most painful parts of everything I experienced. It is a feeling that has followed me long beyond those walls, and it is a reminder of just how alone I was during what should have been the years when I was most protected and most loved.","setting_2_statement":"A man called Billy Davis was central to much of what I endured there. He was the one who forced us — children in a care home, children who were supposed to be protected — into a boxing ring with a Scottish Champion named Scott Harrison. We were made to fight him. We were not given a choice. We were put in that ring and we were beaten, while the adults around us watched. And not only did they watch — they placed bets against us. We were children being used as sport, being gambled on, being hurt for the entertainment and financial gain of the adults who were supposed to be keeping us safe. The humiliation of that, the feeling of being treated as less than human, as something to be used and wagered on, is something I have never been able to fully shake. I was powerless, physically outmatched, and utterly betrayed by every adult in that room.
Billy Davis did not stop there. He also forced us to sell drugs within the care home. Once again, there was no choice involved — this was not something I did freely or willingly. It was something I was made to do under threat. If we refused, or if we did not comply with what was demanded of us, we were beaten. I was a child being coerced into criminal activity by an adult in a position of authority over me, and I was punished physically when I fell short of what he expected. The fear that surrounded those demands was constant and suffocating, and it placed me in situations that no child should ever have been put in.
On top of all of this, I was restrained regularly within the home and beaten. My body bore the physical consequences of what was being done to me, but it was the internal damage — the damage to my sense of safety, my sense of worth, my ability to trust — that has proven the most lasting and the most difficult to live with. Being restrained repeatedly, being physically overpowered again and again, wore something down in me that has taken a very long time to begin to rebuild.
I want to be honest about the full extent of the impact all of this has had on my life, because I think it is important that it is understood. My whole life has been badly affected by what I experienced — not just in this home, but across everything I went through during my years in care. The damage is wide and it is deep. I have never been through any formal therapy. I have never sat with a professional and worked through what was done to me, because for so long the only way I knew how to cope was to block it all out — to push it down as far as it would go and try to keep moving forward without looking back. That has been my survival mechanism, and for a long time it felt like the only one available to me.
But blocking things out does not make them disappear. It simply means they find other ways to surface — in the way you relate to people, in the way you see yourself, in the way you move through the world carrying something heavy that you cannot always name. Everything I experienced in that home, everything that was done to me and forced upon me, has shaped the course of my life in ways I am still coming to understand. I did not deserve any of it. No child did. And it is only right that what happened there is spoken about honestly, recorded truthfully, and acknowledged for the serious and lasting harm that it caused.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null,"setting_2_persons_involved":null}

I was a child placed into an environment that was supposed to protect and care for me, yet instead it became a place of fear, violence, and lasting trauma.
The staff would beat me whenever they felt like it. I was hit, slapped, and punched without reason, often for minor things or no explanation at all. There was no safeguarding, no accountability, and no sense that anyone was there to protect me. One teacher, who was a 3rd dan black belt, would physically assault me if he felt offended. He used his karate on me openly, in front of everyone, humiliating me while inflicting real physical harm. I remember feeling powerless, knowing that even adults who were meant to care for children could hurt me without consequences.
Other staff members behaved the same way. Mr Prat would hit me for no reason at all. There was no discipline or justification — just violence. None of them appeared properly trained to work with vulnerable children, and instead of helping, they abused their authority. The other residents also frequently attacked me. Many of them were clearly deeply disturbed children themselves, and the environment allowed violence to flourish unchecked. I was constantly on edge, never knowing when the next attack would come.
What made it worse was the atmosphere of the place itself. It felt isolated and controlling, almost like a cult. The routines, punishments, and practices felt ritualistic and dehumanising, stripping us of our individuality and sense of safety. As a child, I did not have the language to explain it, but I knew something was deeply wrong.
The trauma from Chelmer has followed me into adulthood. I still suffer the effects to this day — flashbacks, anxiety, and emotional pain that do not simply fade with time. I have needed therapy to begin processing what happened to me there. The damage done was not just physical; it shaped how I see authority, trust, and safety. What I experienced was abuse, and it has left scars that remain with me every day","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}

During the time I lived there, their children bullied me very badly on a regular basis. The bullying was not just verbal—it became physical, and I was attacked repeatedly. On one occasion, they beat me so severely that it left me terrified and in pain, and it ultimately led to me leaving that home. That incident has stayed with me ever since.

I was treated like a second-class citizen in that household. I was not allowed to eat at the same table as them and was made to sit separately, which made me feel isolated, unwanted, and different. It reinforced the feeling that I did not belong anywhere. I strongly felt that they did not genuinely care about me and were only fostering me for the money. No matter what happened, they would always take their children’s side, shouting at me and blaming me, even when I was the one being hurt.

The abuse became so severe that one time, after being badly beaten again by the children, I ran away from the home. I felt I had no other option. I contacted ChildLine, which shows how desperate and unsafe I felt, and I was eventually taken back into care.

These experiences have had a lasting impact on my mental health. I continue to struggle with anxiety, trust, and feelings of worthlessness, which still affect my life today.","setting_2_statement":"My time at Coulpark was an awful and deeply distressing experience. When I first moved there, I was the only girl, which made me feel isolated and extremely vulnerable from the beginning. I was already struggling with depression, and there were several times when I self-harmed, but the staff did not offer me any support or intervention. Instead of helping me, they ignored clear signs that I was in serious emotional distress.

I was also medically neglected on many occasions. One incident that has stayed with me is being left to lie in my own sick overnight without any care or assistance. I felt completely abandoned and worthless, as though my wellbeing did not matter at all. Because I was not getting the help I needed, I ran away multiple times, as I felt there was no other way to escape how I was being treated.

During my time there, I took an overdose and had to be admitted to hospital for a few weeks. This shows how unwell I had become while living in that environment. While I was there, one of the boys in the home sexually assaulted me. I reported this to the police and had to give a statement, which was extremely difficult and traumatic.

The staff in the home did their best to cover up what had happened, and instead of protecting me, I was the one who had to move placements. The boy who assaulted me was allowed to stay. This has had a lasting impact on my mental health, and I continue to struggle with trauma, trust, and feelings of neglect and injustice to this day.","setting_3_statement":"I was at Whick for around one to two months during my time in care, and it was an awful experience. From the beginning, I did not feel safe. My room was broken into multiple times, which left me feeling constantly on edge and without any sense of privacy or security. I was also physically assaulted by some of the other children in the home. They bullied me relentlessly, and although the staff were aware of what was happening, they chose to turn a blind eye and did nothing to protect me.

I became so frightened that I was often too scared to eat. I remember one occasion where I went without food for three days because I was too afraid to go near the dining area. The other children would spit in my food and put dirt and substances into it right in front of staff, and no action was taken. This made me feel humiliated, degraded, and completely unprotected.

There were also multiple incidents where the other children smashed my plates and belongings, again in front of staff, who did nothing to intervene. I felt completely powerless and targeted.

This was one of the worst experiences of my life. It has had a lasting impact on my mental health, leaving me with ongoing anxiety, fear around others, and difficulty trusting people. Even now, I carry the trauma of how I was treated and the complete lack of protection I experienced.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null,"setting_2_persons_involved":null,"setting_3_persons_involved":null}

From early on, it became clear that I was not treated the same as their own child. I often felt like I didn’t belong, like I was less important, and that feeling stayed with me every day I lived there.
They would hit me regularly, at least once a week. Whenever I had a meltdown or “threw a fit,” instead of trying to understand what I was going through, they would punish me physically. It didn’t matter why I was upset or what had happened—I was met with anger and violence. It made me feel like my emotions were wrong, like I wasn’t allowed to feel anything at all.
One of the things I remember most clearly was being made to stand in the hallway, waiting for my foster dad to come home. That waiting was one of the worst parts. I would just stand there, full of fear, knowing what was coming. When he arrived, he would hit me with a slipper or a belt, at least six times, over and over again. It wasn’t just the physical pain—it was the dread leading up to it and the feeling that I had no escape.
I was also called horrible names. The words stuck with me just as much as the physical punishment. They made me feel small, worthless, and unwanted. It wasn’t just the obvious abuse—there were also small, constant things they did to make me feel like I didn’t belong. It was in the way they spoke to me, the way they looked at me, and how differently they treated their own son.
Their son was treated with kindness and patience, things I rarely experienced. Seeing that difference made everything harder. It showed me that they were capable of being caring, just not toward me. That comparison made me feel even more alone, like there was something wrong with me.
Even when I tried my best, it never felt like enough. At school, I worked hard and sometimes received awards for good behaviour or achievement. I remember feeling proud and hopeful when I brought those home, thinking maybe this time they would be pleased with me. But instead, my foster mum would downplay it, brushing it off as if it didn’t matter. Those moments hurt deeply because they made me feel invisible.
Living in that environment made me feel constantly anxious and unsure of myself. I was always trying to avoid doing something wrong, always trying to earn approval that never came. It wasn’t just about the punishment—it was about feeling like I would never be good enough, no matter what I did.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}

We were given no privacy and no dignity. There was no choice in the matter — it was simply expected of us. For a child, that is a humiliating experience, and no matter how many years have passed, I have not been able to forget it.
Mealtimes were just as distressing. We were made to sit together at a large table and were force-fed food whether we wanted it or not. I particularly remember fish. I did not like it, but that did not matter to anyone there. I was made to eat it anyway. Staff stood over us at the table, monitoring us, making sure we did as we were told. Nobody ever asked if we were alright. Nobody showed any warmth. It felt cold and controlling, and there was nothing about those mealtimes that felt like care.
On top of that, I remember being absolutely freezing and not being allowed to do anything about it. We did have nice clothes, but we were not allowed to wear them as part of our everyday lives. Those clothes only came out on a Sunday, for church. It became clear to me that those clothes were not for us — they were to keep up appearances for the outside world. Our actual comfort did not come into it.
I often felt like I was the naughty one, but whenever I tried to speak up or express how I was feeling, I was not believed. Nobody listened to me. Nobody took my side. And during all of that, the physical abuse was happening. I was hit regularly. There was one member of staff who wore a ring, and every time she hit me it would leave a mark. I cannot say for certain how many staff members were involved, but I know it happened again and again, and nobody ever questioned it or stepped in to stop it.
What made everything so much harder was the complete absence of compassion. When I cried, nobody cared. There was no sympathy, no comfort, nothing. When you are a child in pain and the adults around you look straight through you, you begin to believe that your feelings do not matter. That belief does not go away easily. It has followed me into my adult life.
Something that felt particularly wrong was being made to write letters to my parents. We were not allowed to write our own words. The staff would write the same letter on the blackboard and every single one of us had to copy it out. My parents were receiving words that were not mine. Even something as personal as contacting my own family had been taken away from me.
The whole place felt like a military camp. There was no freedom, no sense of individuality, and no feeling that any of us were seen as real people who mattered. We were grabbed and restrained regularly, without any care for the impact it had on us.
I now live with extreme PTSD because of what happened in that place. I have spent so many years trying to push the memories away, but it has been too hard. What happened there did not stay behind when I left — it came with me, and I am still carrying it now. I deserved better. We all deserved better.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}
