The pain from these incidents did not go away quickly; it lasted for days afterwards, affecting me both physically and emotionally.

What made this even worse was the way the staff behaved during these incidents. They would laugh and torment me while restraining me. It felt deliberate, as though they knew how much it affected me and chose to use it against me. This treatment made me feel humiliated, powerless, and deeply distressed. It wasn’t just the physical pain—it was the psychological impact of being treated in such a degrading and uncaring way.

The last time they restrained me was particularly severe. The pain they caused me was so intense that I reacted strongly afterwards. I felt overwhelmed, frightened, and pushed to my limit, and I “kicked off” as a result of everything I had been through. Instead of anyone trying to understand why I reacted that way or offering support, I was simply moved on.

My time there had a significant impact on me, both mentally and physically. I felt completely misunderstood and unsupported. No one made any effort to understand my behaviour, my emotions, or the reasons behind my distress. I was left feeling isolated, scared, and without any sense of safety or stability.

Even after I left, the effects stayed with me. After only a few weeks, I was already deeply affected by what I had experienced there. I remember one summer holiday when the minute I woke up, I was treated as a problem. They restrained me straight away, and I had adults sitting on top of me for what felt like 24 hours. The pressure and force they used were extreme, and even now I struggle to reach behind my back properly because of the damage it caused. It’s something that still affects me physically and emotionally.

The restraints were not about safety — they were about control and punishment. They would be forceful, hitting me and handling me roughly. One incident that has stayed with me was when a staff member jumped on top of me while I was in my bed. He forced socks into my mouth, and I remember struggling to breathe. I was terrified. No child should ever be put in that position, especially by someone who is supposed to protect them.

The emotional abuse was constant as well. The staff would call me horrible names, shout at us, and get right in our faces. It created an atmosphere of fear where you never knew what would set someone off. Some staff members were genuinely kind, and I still remember them, but unfortunately most were not. The negative experiences overshadowed everything else.

Living in that environment made me feel small, powerless, and constantly on edge. I didn’t feel like a child — I felt like a target. The people who should have been helping us were the ones causing harm. Looking back, I can see how much those years shaped me. The physical injuries, the fear, and the emotional damage didn’t just disappear when I left. They stayed with me and still affect me today.

This behavior was not accidental or isolated; it was deliberate emotional abuse carried out by people in positions of authority. Rather than offering care or reassurance, staff used their power to degrade me, leaving me feeling worthless and afraid.","setting_2_statement":"At Carluke Children’s Home (39 Station Rd, Carluke ML8 5AD), the abuse became more extreme. Staff members were often drunk while on duty, creating a chaotic and unsafe environment. I was subjected to verbal abuse and repeated physical assaults. I was kicked repeatedly, leaving bruises across my body. Over time, these attacks resulted in scars that remain visible today. My arms, legs, and torso were frequently marked with bruising, and no one intervened to protect me. The violence I endured caused immense fear and trauma and made me constantly anxious about when the next attack would happen.
The abuse caused me to wet the bed, something I had no control over due to extreme stress and fear. Instead of receiving understanding or help, staff responded with further cruelty and humiliation. I was shouted at, threatened, and physically punished for something that was a direct result of the abuse they inflicted. This only deepened my trauma and reinforced feelings of shame and helplessness.
At the Hamilton Home (Candymill Ln, Hamilton ML3 0FD), the abuse continued. I was beaten for wetting the bed, despite the fact that it was clearly linked to ongoing trauma. These beatings added to the injuries already on my body, increasing the number of bruises and scars I carried. I lived in constant fear, knowing that I could be hurt at any moment. There was no sense of safety, care, or protection—only punishment and violence.
As a result of the prolonged abuse across these care homes, I suffered major and lasting trauma. I continued to wet the bed until the age of 17, directly due to untreated psychological harm. The physical abuse left me with scars across my body, and the emotional abuse severely affected my confidence, mental health, and ability to trust others. My earliest memories of being removed from my family are filled with fear, confusion, and grief. I was already emotionally vulnerable at that age, and being taken into care left me terrified and feeling completely alone.
I believe my first placement was at a children’s home called Easterhouse. From the moment I arrived, I knew I was not safe. There was a mixture of older children and babies, and the environment was chaotic, violent, and completely out of control. Children were screaming, fighting, and running riot constantly. I was frightened all the time.
I was physically abused from a young age by other children. I was pushed around, punched, and beaten regularly. I was badly bullied by older children, and the staff did nothing to protect me. In fact, staff allowed it to happen and at times seemed to find it funny. I remember crying and begging to phone my mum, but my calls were stopped, which meant I had no way of telling her what was happening to me. I was isolated, frightened, and had absolutely no support or anyone to turn to.
I was often sent to my room and kept there all day, out of the way, as if I did not matter. I do not remember exactly how long I stayed at Easterhouse, but I remember how helpless and unsafe I felt there.","setting_2_statement":"After this, I was moved to Balrossy in Kilmacolm, and this is where the abuse became far worse. From the moment I arrived, I was treated with cruelty and violence by staff. They punched me, restrained me aggressively, and kept me separated from other children. I was constantly injured.
My mum noticed cuts and bruises all over my body during weekend visits. Instead of protecting me, the home stopped my visits, leaving me trapped in that place with no escape. I was stuck there being abused.
The staff members involved included Andrew, David, and Jim. Andrew was a big man who would restrain me by sitting on me and crushing me until I could not breathe properly. This was terrifying and made me feel like I was going to die.
I was taken to the shower rooms and told staff had to watch me while I was naked. This happened every day. It made me feel deeply uncomfortable, ashamed, and humiliated. I knew this was wrong. The abuse escalated further when staff came into my room at night and touched me sexually and inappropriately. They told me it was a “massage” and said that they had to give us massages, and that we also had to give them massages. This was sexual abuse. I was a child and had no ability to consent. I was being sexually abused on a regular basis.
If I cried, resisted, or begged them to stop, I was punished. Staff would use older and bigger children to beat me and terrorise me. I lived in constant fear for my life. Every day was terrifying.
I was often going to bed hungry. This was not because food was unavailable, but because I was so emotionally distressed and frightened that I could not eat. I was also allowed to smoke and drink alcohol while underage, which led to addiction at a very young age. There was no care, no protection, and no concern for my wellbeing.
I remained in Balrossy for approximately three to three and a half years. Those years felt like torture. I was physically assaulted, sexually abused, emotionally terrorised, and completely abandoned.
After this, I was moved to Kibble. Although it was not as chaotic as Balrossy, the abuse continued immediately. A staff member named Stevie, who had ginger hair, was extremely violent and cruel. He would stand over me, punch me, pull my hair, and drag me down corridors by my ears. Another staff member named Brian behaved in the same way.
I was kept secluded and isolated and was not allowed to form friendships. Everyone was too scared to speak out. I regularly witnessed other children being beaten by staff. Physical punishment was routine and involved punching and kicking. Some staff appeared to enjoy this violence, and other children were forced to watch it.
This placement caused severe psychological damage. I became suicidal while I was still a child. I was neglected, beaten constantly, and stripped of any sense of safety or self-worth. I remained in Kibble until the age of 16.
At 16, I was placed into a hostel in Glasgow. I had no education, no life skills, and no understanding of how to live independently. I had been institutionalised through abuse, not prepared for life. Although the hostel removed me from immediate physical abuse, the damage had already been done.
The impact of my experiences in care has been lifelong. I suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and depression. I have struggled with drug addiction as a way to block out the trauma and pain of my childhood. I have never known love, safety, or trust. I have no support network and continue to live with the consequences of the abuse I endured.
My childhood was stolen from me. The abuse I suffered in care destroyed my sense of self and permanently altered the course of my life. What happened to me was horrific, sustained, and avoidable. I don’t think there was a single day we were there when we didn’t get slapped or kicked. It became something I expected, even though it was completely wrong. The constant fear and the way we were treated left me feeling small, scared, and completely unsupported.

Looking back, my time at Craigie House has had a lasting effect on my mental health. The physical abuse, the bullying from staff, and the emotional impact of watching my brother being hurt have stayed with me. Before this, I had not been properly cared for and had already experienced abuse. However, that feeling of safety did not last. Within just a few days, my experience in care changed very quickly and became traumatic.
On a daily basis, staff spoke to me and the other children like animals. We were constantly called names and treated with cruelty. The bullying from staff was continuous and deeply distressing. One staff member in particular, Alec Redmond, stands out in my memory. He was a fully grown adult and a very large man compared to me. He regularly restrained me, sitting on me with force. While doing this, he would laugh, knowing that I was struggling to breathe and that I was in severe pain. I was terrified of him. He deliberately picked on me and bullied me repeatedly.
The physical abuse I experienced during these restraints has caused lasting damage. To this day, I cannot move my arms properly, and I live with ongoing pain as a direct result of how I was treated. This has affected me for my entire life.
Punishment in care was most often carried out through physical restraint. We were frequently pinned to the floor, with our hands forced behind our heads. Many nights, I was locked alone in a dark room. I was often sent to bed without food and went hungry. Food was strictly controlled, and if I was unable to eat at the set time, I would miss my meal completely.
I was also restricted from any free time or independence. This was extremely frustrating and damaging, as I already felt powerless. Throughout my time in care, I was repeatedly told that no one wanted me. Staff would bully me using this, reinforcing the belief that I was unwanted and alone. This caused me deep emotional pain and led me to try to escape whenever I could.
There were also occasions where staff forced children to fight each other. They claimed this was “good for us,” but it was frightening, violent, and humiliating. I felt constantly unsafe.
One of the most mentally distressing experiences was being made to create a so-called “photo album” so that I could be “picked.” I was forced to pose in certain positions. This felt degrading and was a form of mental torture that I still struggle to process.
Spending so much of my childhood in this environment slowly broke me down. Over time, it completely wore me away. I began to feel hopeless, trapped, and suicidal. I did not want to live anymore, but I felt there was no escape. Being repeatedly told that no one wanted me made me believe there was no future and no way out.
No one ever made me feel safe or comforted me as a young girl. Instead, I was constantly targeted, bullied, and abused. The abuse I experienced was both mental and physical, with the physical restraints being especially painful and used at every opportunity.
As an adult, I continue to live with the consequences of what I went through. I have been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and anxiety. I struggle to sleep due to flashbacks and intrusive memories. The trauma from my time in care has stayed with me throughout my life. I was a child in a vulnerable situation, and what I needed was to be placed somewhere I would feel safe and supported. That is not what I found.
The punishments in this home were frequent, humiliating, and completely disproportionate. If I was late returning, I was made to stand outside regardless of what I was wearing — sometimes in nothing more than a t-shirt — with my hands held in the air, in the cold. The length of time I was made to stand there depended on how late I had been. It was a deeply humiliating experience, and the cold was at times very difficult to bear. That was not care. That was punishment for the sake of punishment.
If we were considered to have misbehaved, we were made to do chores such as washing the dishes, which would be made to take an extremely long time as a form of discipline. We were also punished by being denied contact with our families, which was one of the cruellest consequences of all. For a child already separated from home, being cut off from family visits felt like a punishment that went far beyond anything reasonable or justified.
There were two members of staff in particular who stand out in my memory. The main person in charge was called Jim, and he was the one who decided and handed out our punishments. There was also a member of staff called Betty, who would regularly scream and shout at us. Living under that kind of unpredictable and aggressive behaviour was frightening, and it made the home feel anything but safe. On top of this, if we were deemed to have done something wrong, we would be given the silent treatment, which in its own way was another form of control and emotional punishment.
I was also locked in a room when I was considered to have misbehaved. Sometimes this would last for hours, depending on what I had supposedly done. Being confined alone in that way, with no idea how long it would last, was frightening and isolating.
I was aware of things happening at night that troubled me deeply. Staff would come into the rooms of some of the other girls during the night, and I remember feeling very unsettled and scared by this. I want that to be recorded as part of my account.
I also recall the girl who slept next to me regularly wetting the bed. The way this was handled by staff was unkind and lacking in any compassion or understanding. She was a child, and she deserved to be treated with care and sensitivity.
I was prevented from forming friendships. Other children were permitted to return later in the evenings, but I was made to come back early. Being singled out in that way reinforced the feeling that I was being treated differently, and it added to the sense of isolation I already felt. Running away felt at times like the only option available to me. I did so on a number of occasions, but each time the police would return me to the home. As much as I did not want to be there, I had nowhere else to go.
The impact of everything I experienced during my time in that home has stayed with me throughout my adult life. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I have found it extremely difficult to form and maintain relationships, and I do not go out very often. The trust that was broken during those years has never fully been restored. I was a child who needed to feel safe and cared for, and instead I was punished, frightened, and isolated at every turn. From the very beginning, the environment felt hostile and unsafe. I remember one manager in particular, Carol Deery, who was absolutely horrible towards me. She would scream and shout in my face constantly, calling me names and making me feel small and intimidated. Her behaviour was aggressive and unpredictable, and I never knew what would set her off.

There was one incident where she locked me in the office for a long time. She stood there screaming and shouting, throwing things around the room while I was trapped inside. I felt terrified and completely powerless. She physically assaulted me on several occasions as well. She hit me, threw me against a wall, and pinned me in place. I remember her hitting me in the jaw and slapping me across the face multiple times. It wasn’t a one‑off incident — it happened more than once, and each time left me feeling more frightened and confused.

There was also another situation involving a child who had smuggled themselves into the house. Instead of dealing with the situation fairly, she tried to pin the blame on me and get me sent away to a secure unit. I hadn’t done anything wrong, but she was determined to make it look like I had. When the person who actually did it eventually owned up, they were only grounded, while I had been facing the possibility of being moved away. It was a clear double standard, and it made me feel targeted and mistreated.

Knowing that Carol Deery is still working in childcare has stayed with me. What she did to me has had a lasting effect on my mental health, and it worries me to think that other vulnerable children could be exposed to the same treatment. My time at Carsewood should have been a period where I was supported and cared for, but instead it became another traumatic experience that I have carried with me into adulthood.","supporting_documents":"collecting","setting_1_persons_involved":null}

Instead, I ended up in another situation that was just as dangerous, if not worse. The staff failed to protect me, and I was exposed to experiences that no child should ever have to go through.

While I was living there, certain men would pick us up and take us to a flat. They would give me and the other girls drugs and alcohol, and once we were under the influence, they would take advantage of us. I was a minor, vulnerable, and already coming from a traumatic background, and instead of being safeguarded, I was placed back into a harmful environment. What makes it even harder to accept is that the staff knew exactly what was happening. They were aware that we were being groomed, and they knew it had happened to me. On one occasion, they even arranged for me to be taken to the house themselves. After that, nothing was done. They simply left it alone and allowed the situation to continue.

There were also times inside the home itself where I felt completely unsupported. I had been diagnosed with ADHD, and there were periods where I would be gone for long stretches of time because I was being groomed by these men. The staff never called the police, never tried to intervene, and never attempted to protect me. They just left us to it, as if our safety didn’t matter.

On top of all this, the staff would talk down to us, call us names, and make us feel worthless. Coming from an abusive background already, this treatment made everything feel even worse. Instead of receiving care, understanding, or guidance, I was met with judgement, neglect, and emotional cruelty. It reinforced the feeling that I didn’t matter and that no one was looking out for me.

All of this has had a massive impact on my mental health. The lack of protection, the grooming, the emotional neglect, and the way I was spoken to have stayed with me throughout my life. Moredun was supposed to be a place where I was safe and supported, but instead it became another traumatic chapter that I have had to carry with me.
